Camera angles/shots/types and editing techniques
Any kind of music is important and very useful for creating meaning. The reason why i say this is because music is good at manipulating the audience's emotions. Music creates rhythm and pace, for example if your listening to an rnb tune then the music would be fast and quite catchy. It doesn't matter what kind of audience you have their moods and feelings will always fit into a song because it has the same pace as what their emotions are telling them. On the other hand music is used to establish a character and their talent through any kind of genre they prefer to work on. As you are aware i'm producing a mucis video and after i have done all the filming, the next stage will have to be editing it.
Editing is a post production technique this means that after i have filmed everything that i need to the next step will be to edit bits. This editing technique is basically when some parts of the footage is reassembled. The term editing refers to the process of getting rid of material that isn't wanted. Such as where a character makes a mistake then it will need to be deleted and will be done through the editing process.
Here are most of the camera and editing techniques:
Establishing shot: this tells us where we are. For my video i will try and incude atleast one establishing shot depending on the location.
Cross cutting: this is when a shot moves from one place to another. This might fit in to my video and i could try it like have a shot which is in one location and put another shot right after that is situated in a different location. That would catch the audience's attention even more because theres more than one location to concetrate on.
Long Shot: This shot shows the full length of a character or object. This will definately be done in my music video to show that the music genre which is bhangra is linked in with the costume too.
High angle shot: Shows weakness this kind of shot will not be used in my music video because it brings in negative parts.
Low angle shot: Shows power. This shot will definatley be used in my video to show that the person that is dancing is in power and is leading the dance kind of thing.
Camera tracks in and out: this is a technique that changes the view of the person or object that is being filmed. By doing this it makes it alot more interesting for the audience to watch becuase at times there will be full shots from a distance or sometimes the shots will be zoomed in close ups.
So basically for when i am recording i am going to try my best to include as many different shots as i can.

New music title!
Unfortunatley i had to once again change my video and the song too. The reason being some of my cast didn't turn up. Because i still had the equipment needed to carry out the recording, i planned and prepared things again and thought of a new idea.I changed the song from being an RnB song to an asian bhangra song. Because the plans i had made didn't happen or go to plan i knew i didn't have much time left so that's the reason i panicked and thought of a second plan. Thankfully i got someone to do some asian dancing for me to this sog title.

lyrics to the music i'm going to use for my video
"Window Shopper"
[Intro]
Ohh
The top feels so much better than the bottom
So much better
[Chorus:]
[Clean version:]
Ja you's a window shopper
Mad at me, I think I know why
Jada you's a window shopper
In the jewelery store, looking at shit you can't buy
Joe you's a window shopper
In the dealership, trying get a test drive
Nas you's a window shopper
Mad as fuck when you see me ride by
[Dirty version:]
Nigga you's a window shopper
Mad at me, I think I know why
Nigga you's a window shopper
In the jewelery store, looking at shit you can't buy
Nigga you's a window shopper
In the dealership, trying to get a test drive
Nigga you's a window shopper
Mad as fuck when you see me ride by
[Verse 1]
Summertime white porche carrera is milky
Im on the grind let my paper stack when I'm filthy
Funny how a nigga get the screw facing at me
Anyhow, they aint got the heart to get at me
I'll get down, southsides the hood that I come from
So I dont cruise to nobodys hood without my gun
You know the kid aint gonna follow that bullshit
try and stick me imma let off a full clip
It aint my fault you done fucked up your re-up
At the dice game who told you put a G up
Everybody mad when their paper dont stack right
When I come around y'all niggas better act right
When we got the tops down, you can hear the system thump
When we rollin' rollin' rollin'
Shut your block down, quick to put a hole in a chump
nigga When we rollin' rollin' rollin'
[Chorus]
[Verse 2]
niggas Love me in L.A. as soon as I pop in
They come scoop me up in LAX and I hop in
When it comes to bad bitches you know I got them
Some from Long Beach, some from Watts, some from Compton
You know a nigga wanna see how cali girls freak off
After that 5 hour flight from New York
I start spitting G at a bitch like a pimp man
Tell her meet me at The Mondrian so we can do our thing
She can bring the lingerie with her I suppose
And we can go from fully dressed to just having no clothes
She can run and tell her best friend bout my sex game
Her best friend could potentially be next man
Listen man, shit changed
I came up from doing my thang
Homey I'm holing, holing, holing
shit man, the store owner watching you
For something get stolen, stolen, stolen

Semiotic Analysis: 50 cent Window Shopper
The music video that i am analysing is by 50cent and the title of the song is called Window Shopper. The first image or part of first part of the music video that the audience can see is a medium shot took in a sports shops. You can tell from the song title that it's based around window shopping that's the reason this kind of a shot is taken, so the audience automatically know that the title of the song will be from the beginning to the end of the video. When your recording whether it's a music video or a short film you have to make the verisimilitude fit correctly into the diegetic world so the audience know that time and effort have really have been put into this piece of work. As soon as the music starts the location totally changes and goes onto the exterior of the shop. A high angle establishing shot appears this could be representing power and wealth and maybe the connotation could be that you dont't have to be a window shopper you can have everything if you have high amounts of money. A medium shot at the same level of a very flashy car appears on one of the roads this illustrates the meaning of money and a high status. An establishing shot of a beach along with beautiful weather again tells the audience that money is everything and you can have everything when you have got it. Most of the video is shot and taken place inside again to promote the title of the song. The artist who has actually sang all the lyrics to this song is involved in the music video. The costume that the cast members have on is of a very high expensive standard. I can tell this through the randum prices that appear on the shelves and also the type of people that are in the shop at the time of the video. The stereotypical view is that you very rarely see low class people who are from a run down area to be shopping in a high class shop. Images of the different items that a normal shop sells are pictured in the video whilst they're placed on the shelves around the shop. Basically the whole purpose and information that this video is giving out to the audience is all entitled to money. In other word money is everything. you can get cars, expensive holidays, top of the range clothing etc. The main target audience in my opinion are men. In the middle of the video there are a number of people from the paparazzi, this connotates that if your famous and well know and have the money then everyone will want to know you.
That was just a quick sort analysis of the piece of music that i am going to be using for my video and the purpose of my video will be different.

Progression for Ideas
Like i mentioned before because i changed my music idea and came up with a new one it's quite fitting into place. Upto now i have a clear view of what sort of step by step shots i'm going to include in my video. The locations are chosen and i'm going to stick with them. Now that i know what type of music i'm going to be doing my video too my ideas and planning techniques are improving.

Music video front covers analysis
This is a image of a front cover to a music video. It’s a simple CD cover which sometimes is a good thing and a bad one. The reason why it may be a bad thing to keep the cover simple is because of money expenses if an artist wanted a real complicated cover to catch more attention then they’d have to think about the money etc. It’s a good idea to keep the cover simple because sometimes the opposite happens more people tend to get attracted to simple designs. The image that is used on this album cover is very promiscuous and it’s purpose is to definitely get the attention of the opposite sex. This kind of an image will definitely get more men buying the album just because of the image they won’t bother what kind of music it is. So basically the image that the artist is putting out their in the real world to promote their music and name is the big part of promotion and advertising. The Mise en scene is kept really simple as well such as the background that is used. If the background for this was in a diegetic location then it will move the audience’s eye contact towards the location so that would mean that the female pictured would be slightly not recognised or noticed. The costume of this female is quite revealing and is the right type of costume to attract the opposite sex. The colour of the costume which is black again has been planned carefully about why one colour should be used and why it’s not a good idea to use several. If the female pictured was totally covered in clothing then not as many men would get attracted to what they do with the way the picture is at this point. The target audience I’m sure is clear now it’s men. You would only get females buying this album because of the music because they like that kind of music the image on the front would only attract them to buying would’ve been if it was a male half naked on the front. It is definitely vice versa if you think about it.

Video for new idea 1
Here is a second music video which the music included is something very similar to what is going to be included in my video. The boy who is rapping in the video is the person who's going to be in my video.
New idea 1
The music to the below youtube link will be very similar to what type of music will be in my video. One of the rappers who are rapping in the video on you tube are going to be in the video.
New Idea 1
From the feedback i got from the audience while i was presenting my ideas, even though most of the feedback i received focused on idea 1 but it wasn't quite as practical. The reason why i say this is because of a few of the things i decided upon. Location being the main thing, because i was going to travel to a further location it would've been difficult for me to do all the filming in one day. Also if i had done alll the filming but wasn't happy with any of the parts then i would've had to take that journey again and record again which would've been a big problem due to time. So now i have come up with a third idea i'm going to stick to that and it still is a music video just a few changes that i've noted on the other post will be took into account.
New Idea 1
There has been a little bit of change of plan.
As i stated in my presentaion about idea 1 i am still leaving it as a music video but i'm changing the cast. The reason for this was because i thought there would've been a bit more than average for me to organise and because i'm working on my own it would've been lots of work for me to do.
My New Idea 1:
* music video
*Entertaining/ (maybe) informing
*once cast member
*Location: more than one location
* Location 1: Park
* Location 2: Sheffield City Centre
*Props: Video Camera

Ideas Feedback
I presented my ideas to my class today in a powerpoint form. While they were watching the presentation i handed out questionnaires that i had put together. The purpose of the questionnaires was to give me a rough idea of which idea the audience were pleased with and were keen on. From this point i will be able to clearly make a sum of how many people like the first second or last idea the best. From the feedback overall most of the class preferred my first idea which is to do a political music video. Most people chose that idea because it's a different type of music and to me personally it will be great to work on it because it's different and also because it's a different location. I will be doing the main filming for the music video and Tai Mahmud will be the individual who i'll be filming. As i mentioned in the presentation the costume and props are quite simple and straightforward so that's less planning on these two topics. I will be including different types of shots from different angles to make the video more appealing and entertaining. The location will either be in an alley way or a park, if it is in the either of these locations the filming will be quite easy as there will be lots of space around me to move around. so there will be no barriers that may stop me from going ahead with the filming.
Lesson objective

Semiotic analysis updated
Semiotic Analysis- one music video
The music video that I am analysing is called “The Ashes” by Tai Mahmud. A music video helps put a name card out to the audience about the artist. The image of an artist is mainly defined and put into place by the quality of their work. The mise-en-scene in this music video is quite normal to any other music video. The location that it is set in is partly an alley way, for a few seconds the location is a studio where the artist is saying the lyrics as you would do for a practice run. Another thing that i noticed in this music video which is different because not many other music videos include are images or few second shots from a different video and include it in theirs.
The effect is different and it explains the words through the images in a different kind of way. So instead of leaving the hidden meaning for the audience to figure out it is shown through the pictures through secondary data. In my judgement because in the video the main location is the alley way to me it symbolises that feelings and thoughts are narrowed and small not heard kind of thing. In the diegetic world when your in an alley way your alone whether your walking through it or just stood there, only your thoughts are seen as begin important to you no one else matters at that point. The character who’s in this music video is the producer of the work. The costume is casual wear like a hoody i don’t think the costume was meant to be of a high class and i hardly think it was the important thing to think about when it came to organising the video shoot.
The main prop is the mic that is placed in the music studio. The lighting and colour are normal and have to fit into the diegetic world to maintain verisimilitude because bearing in mind the shots are taken in an alley way. Other bits of the video the colour and lighting are of a very high quality. The lighting in the alley way is also a lot realistic to a normal everyday day outside etc. If the lighting was changed to dull boring colours like black and white then the audience will automatically know that the colour doesn’t look right and because of this won’t attract their attention much.Moving to the next stage which is camera shots , angles and movement etc, most of the shots were more or less the same. There are medium shots that closely show the artist singing the words.
The connotation that is here is that the words are important and have great meaning behind them that maybe the reason why a medium shot of the artist is done.On a general note the movement is that the camera stays in one place and doesn’t move, but throughout the video the character walks facing his back to the camera and for a few steps the camera picks up the steps and changes it’s movement. I noticed that quite a bit of editing has been done in the video too. This maybe so the other snap shots that have been included will have to be included at the right time and space in time to the video instead of just being misplaced somewhere in no order. If this was done it would clearly show to the audience that full work hasn’t been put towards the video.
Roland Barthes used these two words connotation and denotation to analyse images that can be then be applied to music videos as well as other visual texts.Semiotic Analysis- one short video (Left 4 Dead)
Short fim is an international academic term used to mean a contemporary non- commercial motion picture that is shorter than the average commercial feature film.
They last less than 45minutes long and they can be any genre. The main feature of a short film is that it will emphasise mood over narrative structure. A wide range of students will make short films for their courses they are doing. Making a short film for them is a calling card to the film industry so they can see what skills they have. John Hardwick who is a director of short films pop videos and adverts says that “short films are more comparable to poetry than to plays. In the same way that poetry can bend language and suggest meaning, short films are able to explore the vocabulary”.
I analysed a channel 5 short film called Left 4 Dead.
The beginning of the short film there is a still medium shot of a news presenter reading the daily news. The medium shot is done to show the audience the location and so the dialogue he’s speaking fits in with the rest of the storyline. After this scene there are other shots done of real life situations to show the audience that this is really happening today. These clips build tension that’s why the person who edited the film only made these few clips last a few seconds in total. After these shots the camera pauses on a metal gate from a low angle, this makes the audience think what the next shot is going to be or who’s going to appear. A young girl appears and jumps over the gate at this point her body language shows the audience she’s up to something awkward.
Then she slowly moves across while she’s creeping across her facial expressions tell the audience she’s in search of something and what she’s doing she wants it to be kept quiet and I can tell this because of the type of footsteps she takes. A location shot is done it shows a bit of a rough field with lots of unwanted items, this will give the audience a bit of a rough idea of what the rest of the short film is about. The next character that appears is the same age range as the first person who was filmed this matches my point earlier when I said that students tend to make short films more to help them with their courses etc. A close up of the gun that the female character is holding this connotates that it’s an important item that’s the reason for it to be a close up view and at this point when the prop is viewed the atmosphere changes around the audience they start to think what type of a film it is.
A tracking shot is done when she starts running along the pavement this clearly states that she’s hiding from the people around that area for what ever reason. The pace builds up when a third male character is shown in the film. The lighting and colour are all real for the diegises because you have to have an appropriate location for such a powerful short film that has a lot of meaning behind it.
One Documentary- Walking with Dinosaurs
Documentaries often seek to persuade and inform the audience about any set topic. The key concept is representation mainly because it has two ways to mediate a piece of media text. They also use real production techniques that are used on a day to day basis. A very quick start into the kind of location that the documentary is set in. Walking with dinosaurs is a science/natural history documentary. The reason why I know it’s this type of documentary is because the key features included are some kind of wildlife and it goes into detail about this particular theme. It also features a narrator who does all the speech for the documentary to give an outline of what is happening and on some cases to give his/her opinion. Because the documentary starts of quickly into the location it therefore is showing the audience the actual anchoring commentary in other words this is the place we are in. It starts off with a medium close up of a dinosaur and after a few seconds the narrator starts speaking and describing a little more about the dinosaur that is on screen. When he starts talking abut his large plates on his back the camera straight away increases the zoom.
This clearly illustrates that the plates are the important part of the dinosaurs body because that’s what part is being explained in detail. Non diegetic music is used to show verisimilitude and so the audience know that it’s a real. In the middle of the documentary a high angle location shot is made, this is to show the audience what type of place the dinosaur lives in. Throughout the documentary the camera work continues to maintain the structure of the close up medium shots. The movement of the dinosaur is shown at zoomed level this is to make it more real, exciting and dramatic for the audience so thy emphasise with what is being said by the narrator. Mike Edwards (2003) suggests that we make modality judgements about how realistic or how shocking a media text is.

Media Studies Assignment Learner Feedback Sheet
OCR AS MEDIA STUDIES H540
Unit: G324: Advanced Portfolio
Student Name: Monir, Shazana
Block: C1
Key Tracking Assessment/Homework Task:
The table below gives you feedback and understanding on how your work has been marked
against assessment criteria for A2 Media Studies.
Assessment Objectives Summative Feedback
(Have these been met?)
AO2 To assess candidates’ application of
knowledge and understanding in evaluating
their own work, showing how meanings
and responses are created. (5%)
Solid attempt to analyse the meanings encoded
into the texts but you need to use more in the
way of media terms and theories. You haven’t
mentioned what the music video you analysed
actually is.
AO3 To assess candidates’ ability to plan
and construct media products using
appropriate technical and creative skills.
(15%)
Your work needs to be presented in an audiovisual format, e.g. a narrated video intercut with
clips from the texts, a commentary laid over the
text, an MP3 podcast or illustrated PowerPoint.
Avoid posting text to your blog. Well done for
embedding the videos into your blog.
AO4 Demonstrate the ability to undertake
and apply appropriate research. (5%)
Your texts are generally well chosen but you
needed to analyse a short film, rather than a
short extract from a feature film so your Scream
analysis isn’t appropriate. You haven’t
mentioned what the music video you analysed
actually is.
The table below provides you with tutor feedback and their recommendations for key areas on
how you can improve and develop your work for AS Media Studies.
Key Areas for My Individual Development – Marked out of 50
Knowledge and Understanding (A02) 12/20 marks
• You need to outline who has produced the text, who the target audience is and what the
method of exchange for each text is. Use the Harvard Referencing System to reference your
texts.
Planning/Construction/Technical Skills (A02) 4/20 marks
• Submit your posts in an audio/visual format if you wish to achieve high grades.
· Well done for doing a video analysis of your practise video.
Research (A04) 6/10 marks
• Try to write more about who produced these texts and why (was it produced for TV, is it a
promotional video, is it a student film? etc.). Who is the target audience? Where has the text
been exhibited (theatrically, TV or web only?)?
Good effort Shazana but you need to use more media terms and theories and you need to present your
work in a Web 2.0 format.

Short film codes and conventions
Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR8j6geysBk
Purpose: to show young people that a ife with drugs and weapons involved isn't a very good move or the way to live your life.
Target audience: Teenagers, young adults
Short film codes and conventions
Channel 4- Trebla
The codes and conventions of this short film that was shown on channel 4 are:
*It clip that i analysed lasted less than 45minutes.
*It was a fictional kind of documentary. It was filmed on in the diegetic world in an alley way, and real people who have experienced and seen people who are living rough and taking drugs etc.
*This short film was not animated but was live action i could tell this from the lights and camerawork, the realism was totally met and this way the audience are likely to pay more attention because real life people are sharing their knowledge about the way people live these days such as living on drugs and stuff. In my jdgement the theme that is acknowledged in this short film is the thoughts and lifestyles of youg teenagers in the streets of London today. To me i think this film is made by students or aspiring film makers because the theme relates to the student age range. It's also a calling card from the makers of the film to the film industry. I could say there's a slight bit of a monologue in this short film but it isn't because there are two different voices, but maily one voice will be talking for longer that's may be why i think it could be named as a monologue. I'd say to make and enhance this video it was cheap. The reason why i say this is because a special scene or setting wasn't needed. The location was there already because it was in the diegetic world. No extra costs were needed, jus the equipment and the people taking part in the film were needed.

Semiotic analysis homework
Semiotic Analysis- one music video
The mise-en-scene in this music video is quite normal to any other music video. The location that it is set in is partly an alley way, for a few seconds the location is a studio where the artist is saying the lyrics as you would do for a practice run. Another thing that i noticed in this music video which is different because not many other music videos include are images or few second shots from a different video and include it in theirs.
If the lighting was changed to dull boring colours like black and white then the audience will automatically know that the colour doesn’t look right and because of this won’t attract their attention much.

The connotation that is here is that the words are important and have great meaning behind them that maybe the reason why a medium shot of the artist is done.
On a general note the movement is that the camera stays in one place and doesn’t move, but throughout the video the character walks facing his back to the camera and for a few steps the camera picks up the steps and changes it’s movement. I noticed that quite a bit of editing has been done in the video too. This maybe so the other snap shots that have been included will have to be included at the right time and space in time to the video instead of just being misplaced somewhere in no order. If this was done it would clearly show to the audience that full work hasn’t been put towards the video.
Semiotic Analysis- one short video (Scream)
At the beginning of the film, a medium shot of a home telephone is shown that’s securely placed on a table. The deeper meaning to this Is that it’s showing that the telephone is the important prop at this part of the film. The second time the phone rings the camera gradually but in good speed moves up closer to the main character’s face to show her body language the second time the phone rings. The main character’s body language at the time of the second phone call is very calm, because she doesn’t see it a being something creepy. This shows the audience that this first character tries to stay positive at times. Something that has really caught my attention as watching the video. A few seconds later the phone suddenly rang again and the location was in the kitchen at this point. At the side of the worktop where the main female character seated herself near her there was a set of knives. Now when most of us see a knife in our direction we will scream that’s where the title plays a vital role.
At the time of the call the woman is cooking something on the hob, she forgets all about it because she’s speaking to this anonymous gentleman on the phone. This shows the power this man has and shows that his voice has a lot of weight to it. The camera moves all over the house being behind the woman. She has positive body language and facial emotions this shows that she doesn’t suspect something and also leaves the audience on a bit of a cliff hanger and keeps them thinking what the end result ill be. A little while after the man says something in particular on the phone, her mood changes and goes to a negative note. The camera pans forward and gives a close up medium shot, to illustrate to the audience that something is changing and something scary is about to happen. The ending bit certainly is tricky and grabs your attention especially with the sound effects.

A very quick start into the kind of location that the documentary is set in. Walking with dinosaurs is a science/natural history documentary. Question 7This is to be done in a 45 second voice/video file. You will work in a pair and record each other; if you would rather not be filmed then you can work alone and complete an audio recording. You must answer the question, so please discuss:
Knowledge about software from prelim task to final
Knowledge about magazine conventions from prelim to final
Importance of planning and drafting from prelim to final
Importance of feedback from others in helping you create your final ideas.
When we were set the task to complete a college magazine on the 2 software’s, I was really confused because I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it. But as soon as I started my actual project I was really good and have improved so much. I’m actually quite surprised to how much I have picked up and learnt in a short period of time using the 2 pieces of software.
While I was doping my college magazine I did not know about the codes and conventions of an actual magazine and how it will help me to do my actual one. When I started my actual piece of project work most of the time I had a magazine in front of me and copied it and wherever certain types of text and barcodes and price labels were etc I did the same. My magazine must look like a real magazine that’s the whole point of having a real one to look at.
I found it really easy when I did my drafts then I was able to relate to them when I did my actual magazine. I just had to decide about the colours and text etc. So yes I found it quite easy.
The feedback that I got from my class mates for my front cover was that the colours that I used on my front cover were really good and mixed in together. My main medium front cover image was very striking

evaluation updated and completed
Media evaluation
Question 1: For my magazine the way I have laid out my text is similar to how it is on a real magazine. Without a real magazine in front of you I think it is really hard to lay things out according to a real magazine.
The codes and conventions that I have used on my magazine are stereotypes. Without reading the magazine a random person could have a quick look at the front cover and stereotype there and then. For my sell line I have used a pull quote, by doing this it catches the reader’s attention more quickly in a short bit of time. To make my magazine really realistic in the diegetic world I have copied the styles of other magazines. The types of things that I have copied are things like whereabouts their titles are spaced and placed on the front cover. Also where the date, barcode and price is on the front cover. I had to put it accurately in the same place as the real magazine, so when I put these two magazines together you won’t be able to tell which I made and which is the actual one.
Question 2: From my front cover of my magazine anyone could stereotype or judge it without reading anything about it but just by looking at the front cover. In the media there are lots of representations that are portrayed on magazines and then stories are made which aren’t true. If a random person had a quick look at my magazine then they would quickly think that it is a gangster kind of magazine for males. They’d be right for thinking that it’s a magazine aimed at males but they should open it and read it before using their own initiative about what the purpose of it is. Even the costume of my character may be judged in a wrong way, because he’s wearing a cap and slightly informal clothes as people would stereotypically say. Also people would think that the clothes he is wearing aren’t relay appropriate for a front cover but instead he should’ve been wearing a smart outfit. But like I mentioned before people need to read the magazine then they will understand that the information inside it does match with the person on the front and is costume goes with it too. A magazine wouldn’t be a realistic one if the person on the front was connotating a more formal look by the costume but then inside all the information is to do with Rap etc.
For my magazine I have reinforced stereotypical images which make people think the negative way, but they definately need to read more to get their views in a straight line. On my front cover as you can see I have a medium shot of a young white male. Stereotypically people will assume that he does music like R n B and hip hop etc. But that isn’t the case he’s a young white male but bases his music on a political basis and look at things in a different way to how an R n B artist would.
Question 3: The company or type of people that would distribute my magazine would be a UK music magazine preferably a political music company. They won’t really be a conglomerate they’d maybe be an independent company but still have links with huge music companies. I think the circulation for my type of magazine will be in the middle somewhere. It’s promoted to the public by being sold in shops maybe used on companies websites to show that this is what they distribute. I think that my magazine will have a TV/radio station, by doing this it will be more successful and will reach a wider audience across the UK. Therefore my magazine will be more popular and will be more known by people. By having more than one type of media it’s more likely that the word about the magazine is around. Having more than one type of media is called cross media ownership.
Question 4: The target audience for my product are male teenagers, 16-24. Today because there is a huge impact and discussion on the political side of things, I think more teenagers are aware of this therefore have a little more knowledge into it. So my magazine will be a clear outlook for them to read and interpret information and also learn new things they never knew before.
Here is an image of my front cover the image that I have used here automatically shows who the target audience are and who the magazine is aimed at. If an elderly person sees this magazine they will know that it’s not aimed at them but it’s for the younger generation. They will be able to tell this from the image that is used, from the type of text and maybe the colour and also the way things are set out on it.

Interview questions for my magazine
Since we last spoke to Ash Mckenzie he has been a very busy individual. He’s took a real big step and signed a contract with Sound Records who are positive his music will shine at a high level. He has become such a high profiled lyricist that he is becoming more ad more in demand to publish his skills with various music companies.
Hello Ash, how are you?
“orite”
Moving quickly into the questions, how do you feel about lots of companies wanting to work with you?
“I was quite shocked I haven’t been in the music business long, but I’m overwhelmed with the feedback I am getting, I really can see myself developing on a higher level”.
Have you written many songs/tracks that you wouldn’t make public?
“Yes I have as a matter of fact, I’ve written about 5 songs that are quite personal to me and wouldn’t put them out to the public. I do read through them from time to time and improve them if I can”.
What are your long term career goals?
“Basically they are the same more or less, mainly to stream my music every direction I can get it heard. Also to continue to produce and continue to develop my music to a next level every time. Lastly to keep my profile high and try and put the message across as much as possible about what my music is explaining”.
Have any of your songs been published and by whom?
“ Yes I’ve had 3 songs of mine that have been successfully published by Sound Records which is a music recording company based in London”.
Do you prefer to work on your work alone or with other artists?
“Personally I find it easier and less hassle to work by just with myself. If I’m going to do the song writing then I prefer all my ideas to be down there too, instead of the other artists because things can get very tricky when you work with another artist.
What made you get into music in the first place?
“Erm, lots of my peers spend most of their time listening and exchanging their ideas and words about music etc. I was into music at a very small age i used to just write lyrics about what was happening around me and in my life. So from there i knew it was my talent and pursued it and am doing it now and love it”.
Do you listen to other types of music if so what type?
“I can’t really tell you what type of music I listen to other than my own, because if I hear something and I like it I’ll listen to it no matter what genre it is. I don’t stick to listening to a specific artist or genre etc because it doesn’t have an impact and I see my music as a whole new step from other music”.
Do you do a lot of touring?
“Well.... Haven’t really done many tours, but did do one in’ the south east of England last year. I know it was a long time. But enjoyed it and it was a whole new experience. In the future will be doing a lot more tours so watch out!
Do you agree with this statement: “The day you’re happy with your songs is the day you should stop writing”?
“Ermmm... no I don’t really. I think even though you as an artist think your music is amazing and you’ve tried your hardest and can’t do any better, that’s not the sign to stop. You should keep going, keep improving and don’t stop doing what you love doing the best.

For my Unit G321 foundation portfolio coursework, I intend to produce a spoken word music magazine, print production aimed at 16-24 year olds males consisting of a front cover, contents page and double page spread.
My magazine will be an indie magazine which focuses on spoken word performance artists, who create political music.
Photography
My print production will require one medium close up shot for the cover, a few images for the contents page and one image for the double page spread.
My cover image was took behind a white wall near to where I live I thought this would be an easy location to get too and the scenery was how I wanted it to be. The character that I chose was my male friend, I chose him because I knew he would be able to position himself for the images the way i wanted him to be. Also the type of dress sense he has was how I wanted him to dress for the images so there was no hassle there about what he was going to wear etc. The costume that he wore was the same for all the images. They were normal dark coloured combat trousers which were baggy and blended in well with the positions he was holding. I wanted him to wear a cap which was very 21st century and again was what I would’ve told him to wear because I had the type of clothes I wanted him to wear.
We didn’t need any props for the pictures so it was all quite straightforward. I took lots of images, but haven’t yet decided which ones I’m going to include where. But a medium shot has to be used for my front cover, then for my contents page another medium shot and then tiny miniature pictures towards the bottom of the page just to make it look a bit different and less boring. For my double page spread I haven’t made my decision but will probably decide when I come to actually finishing it off.
My double page spread is going to be an interview with a rapper who uses spoken word to express things in a political way. The questions are finished but just need to add a few more questions to make it up to a maximum of ten questions. They are about how he got into music, the religious and political side to it etc. Health and safety notes aren’t really essential because we didn’t go on a far location, we were close to home so there was nothing really to take into account regarding safety issues.

For my media studies coursework I am completing three parts as part of a music magazine. The three parts consist of a front cover, contents page and double page spread. My magazine is a political music magazine which is basically music that is spoken word. The target audience that I my magazine Is aimed at are late teens, so 16-20 year olds.
The gender is 100% males, you can tell that from the way the front cover is completed. The locations that I picked for the pictures was a plain white wall outside and then two or three pictures are taken against a brick wall. The ones that are against a brick wall can be blended, so that’s nothing to worry about. The character that I chose was my male friend, I chose him because I knew he would be able to position him self for the pictures as I wanted him to be.
Also the type of dress sense he has was easier too and therefore made my job a lot easier. The reason why I say this is because I know the way he dresses and I won’t really have to tell him what to wear or how to dress because he already dresses in that particular way. To take my pictures I only needed one person I could’ve chosen to have a few people but I wanted to just stick to one.

Magazine Drafts!
Target Audience
Mainstream or Niche
Age
* Gender
* Sub genre
* Title of magazine and connotations
* Ideas for main cover image
* Ideas for main splash article
* Ideas for the possible contents
Draft 1
Target audience: teenagers
Mainstream
12-18 age range
Males
Sub genre: Indie
Title: ‘SHOCK’
Main cover image: images of male teens so it’s clear to the target audience who it is mainly aimed at etc.
Main splash article: main story to do with male teens, or a new music band consisting of male teenagers and all about them and their career in music. Include images to be part of the text and will show step by step about their lifestyles and where they are up to now.
Ideas for contents: Info, research, facts, figures statistics to do with male teens and that particular music genre.
I could have this font for my magazine title. It’s bold print, largely spaced out and the style it’s created in is small cubed blocks. Does stand out and if it is the style it is and if some colour is added to it too then it will definitely catch the reader’s attention.
Draft 2:
Target audience: 25+
Gender: males
Age: early 20’s late 20’s
Mainstream
Sub genre:
Title:
Main cover image: males of that age range,
Main splash article: double page detailed spread maybe on one individual who’s new to the music industry. Also lots more up to date music news from all different music bands, genres etc.

My magazine!!
Target audience: early and late teens
Gender: males
Genre: Political
Title: ‘Vex It Up’
Main cover image: Title maybe down the left hand side of the cover with a few arrows pointing up, linking back to the title meaning turn it up. The image on the front cover will be a medium shot maybe placed towards the top right hand side. Then under the image just little insider details of what else is included inside. A am also going to include a pull quote on the front cover and then on the double page spread include another differnet quote which will be a lot larger and bolder to the rest of the text.
The contents page mainly including what is going to be in the rest of the magazine. Maybe a medium shot and somewhere near the top and then roughly three different smaller images near the bottom of the page. I am going to include a promotion/offer and which will make the viewers subscribe.
Double page spread will have a long shot prefrebly on the left hand side and then three columns towards the right side or near the bottom for the text. I'm going to definately include an interview which will have a range of mixed questions such as: the artists lifestyle, music, career, education etc.
