Semiotic Analysis: 50 cent Window Shopper

The music video that i am analysing is by 50cent and the title of the song is called Window Shopper. The first image or part of first part of the music video that the audience can see is a medium shot took in a sports shops.You can tell from the song title that it's based around window shopping that's the reason this kind of a shot is taken, so the audience automatically know that the title of the song will be from the beginning to the end of the video. When your recording whether it's a music video or a short film you have to make the verisimilitude fit correctly into the diegetic world so the audience know that time and effort have really have been put into this piece of work. As soon as the music starts the location totally changes and goes onto the exterior of the shop. A high angle establishing shot appears this could be representing power and wealth and maybe the connotation could be that you dont't have to be a window shopper you can have everything if you have high amounts of money. A medium shot at the same level of a very flashy car appears on one of the roads this illustrates the meaning of money and a high status. An establishing shot of a beach along with beautiful weather again tells the audience that money is everything and you can have everything when you have got it. Most of the video is shot and taken place inside again to promote the title of the song. The artist who has actually sang all the lyrics to this song is involved in the music video. The costume that the cast members have on is of a very high expensive standard. I can tell this through the randum prices that appear on the shelves and also the type of people that are in the shop at the time of the video. The stereotypical view is that you very rarely see low class people who are from a run down area to be shopping in a high class shop. Images of the different items that a normal shop sells are pictured in the video whilst they're placed on the shelves around the shop. Basically the whole purpose and information that this video is giving out to the audience is all entitled to money. In other word money is everything. you can get cars, expensive holidays,top of the range clothing etc. The main target audience in my opinion are men. In the middle of the video there are a number of people from the paparazzi, this connotates that if your famous and well know and have the money then everyone will want to know you.

That was just a quick sort analysis of the piece of music that i am going to be using for my video and the purpose of my video will be different.

Progression for Ideas

Like i mentioned before because i changed my music idea and came up with a new one it's quite fitting into place. Upto now i have a clear view of what sort of step by step shots i'm going to include in my video. The locations are chosen and i'm going to stick with them. Now that i know what type of music i'm going to be doing my video too my ideas and planning techniques are improving.

This is a image of a front cover to a music video. It’s a simple CD cover which sometimes is a good thing and a bad one. The reason why it may be a bad thing to keep the cover simple is because of money expenses if an artist wanted a real complicated cover to catch more attention then they’d have to think about the money etc. It’s a good idea to keep the cover simple because sometimes the opposite happens more people tend to get attracted to simple designs. The image that is used on this album cover is very promiscuous and it’s purpose is to definitely get the attention of the opposite sex. This kind of an image will definitely get more men buying the album just because of the image they won’t bother what kind of music it is. So basically the image that the artist is putting out their in the real world to promote their music and name is the big part of promotion and advertising. The Mise en scene is kept really simple as well such as the background that is used. If the background for this was in a diegetic location then it will move the audience’s eye contact towards the location so that would mean that the female pictured would be slightly not recognised or noticed. The costume of this female is quite revealing and is the right type of costume to attract the opposite sex. The colour of the costume which is black again has been planned carefully about why one colour should be used and why it’s not a good idea to use several. If the female pictured was totally covered in clothing then not as many men would get attracted to what they do with the way the picture is at this point. The target audience I’m sure is clear now it’s men. You would only get females buying this album because of the music because they like that kind of music the image on the front would only attract them to buying would’ve been if it was a male half naked on the front. It is definitely vice versa if you think about it.

From the feedback i got from the audience while i was presenting my ideas, even though most of the feedback i received focused on idea 1 but it wasn't quite as practical. The reason why i say this is because of a few of the things i decided upon. Location being the main thing, because i was going to travel to a further location it would've been difficult for me to do all the filming in one day. Also if i had done alll the filming but wasn't happy with any of the parts then i would've had to take that journey again and record again which would've been a big problem due to time. So now i have come up with a third idea i'm going to stick to that and it still is a music video just a few changes that i've noted on the other post will be took into account.

As i stated in my presentaion about idea 1 i am still leaving it as a music video but i'm changing the cast. The reason for this was because i thought there would've been a bit more than average for me to organise and because i'm working on my own it would've been lots of work for me to do.

Ideas Feedback

I presented my ideas to my class today in a powerpoint form. While they were watching the presentation i handed out questionnaires that i had put together. The purpose of the questionnaires was to give me a rough idea of which idea the audience were pleased with and were keen on. From this point i will be able to clearly make a sum of how many people like the first second or last idea the best. From the feedback overall most of the class preferred my first idea which is to do a political music video. Most people chose that idea because it's a different type of music and to me personally it will be great to work on it because it's different and also because it's a different location. I will be doing the main filming for the music video and Tai Mahmud will be the individual who i'll be filming. As i mentioned in the presentation the costume and props are quite simple and straightforward so that's less planning on these two topics. I will be including different types of shots from different angles to make the video more appealing and entertaining. The location will either be in an alley way or a park, if it is in the either of these locations the filming will be quite easy as there will be lots of space around me to move around. so there will be no barriers that may stop me from going ahead with the filming.
